1.0 A Brief History Of The Union The Union of England and Scotland goes back to 1707. But, as always, historical events have a backstory. In this case, the Act of Union bailed out a bankrupt Scotland from financial disaster following the Darien Venture, a bold but poorly judged attempt to establish a colony in Panama in the late 1690s that would have controlled an overland route between the Pacific and Atlantic.
